The Product

We’re a backpack company with a distinct take on design and appeal. We draw inspiration from ethnic communities around the world and infuse our backpacks with traditional color schemes, patterns, and techniques. Our backpacks are simple and elegant in structure, like the peaceful pastoral communities we adopt artistic styles from.

Our current line of backpacks are inspired by the simplicity of rural life of as well as the vibrant and ancient art styles of South Asia. The main body design of the backpack is modeled after the traditional ‘ikat’ weaving style, which is said to have originated in South Asia hundreds of years ago. Ikat (pronounced “ee-kot”), which means “to bind,” is a form that involves a series of methodical steps that contribute to its uniqueness. Essentially, by dyeing the threads before weaving, an endless number of combinations and textures are able to be produced.

  1. First the weaver ties together bundles of threads in specific arrangements in preparation for dyeing
  2. Bundles are then dyed according to the threaded arrangements
  3. The weaver then fastens the dyed thread bundles to a loom
  4. As the thread is woven through the loom, the textured design is produced from the initial dyed pattern

In addition to color designs, weavers have been known to incorporate mythological tales or religious symbols in ikat patterns. These elements underscore the cultural significance of the art form.

The ikat tradition has been passed down through generations by master weavers to their apprentices. It lives on today in various weaving communities in South Asia that continue to produce unique blends of color and shape. As Jatalo grows and becomes exposed to more regions, we hope to incorporate the art styles we encounter into the design of our backpacks.
